Demigod traits

Weapon

Anaklusmos/riptide is a 3 ft long sword with a leaf shaped blade. Made of celestial bronze that harms the divine and monstrous beings of the world along with mortals if the mortal is important enough such as Setne and Carter Kane, and it can even cut down ghouls and ghosts. It’s disguised as a pen that always returns to him and durable enough to survive full submersion in lava

Strength/striking

Lifting strength

Combat Speed

Scaling to a son of Athena * -Zane dodging the charge of a leonte that was fast enough to move down a hall as a flash of yellow, and move across an office in a flash DOA pg.25,42 * -Scaling to Annabeth who could dodge Kelli HOH ch.15 * -Who’s one of the fastest characters we’ve seen in the universe. She’s fast enough to blitz Rachel before riptide can even switch to sword form after being uncapped. BOTL ch.14 And from the lightning thief that it only takes half a second for the sword form to release, but Kelli moves faster * -Leo doing a backward somersault to dodge large rocks thrown at him at super speeds. TLH ch.43 * -Piper coming up from below a ridge to move fast enough to to be a blur of turquoise and black TLO ch.42 * -Jason deflecting lightning in a fight with a ventus he was tagged when he wasn’t ready to fight, so thishad nothing to do with being a son of Zeus cause he can be affected by lightning, This one needs context cause you could argue against it * -but venti are storm spirits. In PJO nature spirits obviously make up nature. From trees spirits to river spirits, they have humanoid forms, but are also literally a tree or river or flower. For this venti named Dylan his true form is a literal storm cloud along with the other venti that comes with him. Venti are literal thunderstorms because they are the thunderclouds. It’s not the same as characters like avatar characters that can generate lightning cause in this case the lighting is being generated by the actual cloud. * -Besides that feat he did dodge a charge of a venti who are fast enough to move only a little slower than Arion who’s supersonic BOO ch. 59

Movement speed

Only faster than above average mortals * - Ran 10 yards before Bianca could say anything. TTC ch.6 * - human magician in good shape struggling to keep up SOS pg.9 * - outpaced Sadie while holding a heavy object, COP pg.12 * - Apollo who had been turned mortal couldn’t keep up with Percy and Meg THO pg. 57

Durability/Endurance

Agility

Mist control

The mist is the uppermost layer of the Duat which is the realm of magic. It’s the reason mortals don’t see anything out of the ordinary when dealing with the magical. Someone who can control it can alter memories, appearances, summon weapons, make creatures to fight for you, hide objects even if they’re directly in-front of you, create illusions, and teleport. Though he’s not very good at it Percy has shown the ability to make small illusions and hide in plain sight

Magic

Magic resistance

Mental defense

Intelligence

Combat feats

Percy vs Ares * - Although Ares wasn’t taking him seriously it’s still impressive for a week trained 12 y/o especially since Ares seems to have battle precog because he knew where Percy was attacking before he even did it. Also shows how his adhd lets him see how his opponents tense, so he knows where the attack is gonna come from. TLT pg.341-344 * - After a year he’s considered one of the best swordsman in the last hundred years, cabins of super humans don’t work him out and he wishes he could fight the war gods cabins SOM ch.6 * - Curse Percy vs. Minotaur TLO ch.11 * - Against Carter he showed to be quick and strong, and while it was completely one-sided, he still told Carter he did better against him than most others SOS pg.5-6 * -Beating up the 1st and 2nd cohort of Camp Jupiter. Lots of rolling and flipping showing a very active and athletic fighting style SON ch.12 * -Easily beats Magnus, son of Frey, in hand to hand combat TSTD ch.1 While Magnus isn’t much of a fighter, he’s still capable of ripping a 20 ft. long lamppost out the ground and jump 60 ft. vertically. Percy’s trained in unarmed combat at Camp and this is one of the few times he does

Will

Aegis feats
Important to note that- while using his powers does drain him over time, the amount he's drained is pretty overstated. His storm powers are the only ones that drain him, in the way that he'll feel physically tired from it, but being to able to use his water powers at a high level is never affected especially considering his best feat occured after prolonged use of his storm powers.

PotA Twist: Vanifer joins w/ party to save Imix?

First time poster running Princes of the Apocalypse campaign as a first-time DM. Like many I quickly found the PotA plot lacking, just dungeon after dungeon, and started home brewing content for my 7 person party (the size of which is a challenge in and of itself).
The party is making its way thru the Weeping Colossus and are expecting a showdown with Big Bad Vanifer as the finale. At this stage it’s been a lot of dungeon crawling to defeat Marlos and now get close to Vanifer. She has been built up as the most powerful and patient/clever of the prophets. Rather than a straight up fight, I’m planning the following scenario [Felix, Sybil, Gry, Chad, Heba, Tharivol, & Paradise, avert your eyes]:
Vanifer has recently discovered Vizeran DeVir’s ancient writings in the Fane of the Eye (gave the party the chance and they missed it) and is starting to understand that the Elder Eye / Chained God is just using the Elemental Princes to be freed and that Imix could be destroyed as a result. She wants to burn down the Kingdoms of Faerun, not shred the fabric of reality. The Rite to bring Imix to the material plane is nearly complete as the party enters the Fire Shrine.
Vanifer is prepared to halt the Rite to protect Imix but knows that Elizar, her deputy who I’ve remade as a pretty powerful Sorcadin, would see this as weakness and a betrayal and try to seize her followers and take control. She fears he has already made a pact with Halinaxus to this effect. Vanifer will make a plea to the party to help her defeat Halinaxus who lurks in the next chamber, the fire elemental Incinerath meant to transform into Imix, and Elizar who is on his way to witness the completion of the Rite, so that she can stop Imix from coming to the Material Plane, foiling the Elder Eye and DeVir’s plans, while preserving herself and Imix.
I’m RPing Vanifer as if she is in love with Imix, she wants so badly to be with him yet wants to protect him from the Eye. She will be very reluctant to actually destroy Tinderstrike as it is her connection to him. She will propose the party protect her while she completes a 1-minute spell to close the portal, without needing to plunge Tinderstrike into it - so they won't have her firepower for much of the fight. From a CR perspective, it would be the edge of a Hard/Deadly encounter just fighting Halinaxus, Incinerath, and Elizar without Vanifer's help.
Depending how things go I worry about even 1 round of the Party fighting Imix, as there are seven level 9 PCs instead of four lvl 12-15. Imix could potentially TPK them in 1-2 rounds. But if they totally mess up and he makes it through, so be it.
What do you all think? Is this a compelling way to wrap the story? Any way to improve? Should I nerf Imix somewhat just in case the party has to fight him for a couple rounds? Interested in how others have modified the campaign, especially working in DeVir as pulling strings from afar.
And just to share some plot points from our campaign in case it gives others ideas for changes and homebrew stuff, along the way the party has...

Karjala Casino Review

It’s all the K’s at Karjala Casino, a Finnish online casino that’s designed for mobile players in particular. The smart and responsively designed site is easy to browse and loaded with an enticing selection of games. A good number of these is displayed on the homepage including Big Bad Wolf, Fruit Warp, Golden Fish Tank and Dragonz. There’s a live chat window situated in the bottom right of the screen and there’s the promise of 1,000 free spins, distributed at a rate of 10 a day for your first 100 days on the site.
Slots, video poker, table games and live casino games are the categories that Karjala Casino has to offer. Developers like NetEnt are on board, allowing the Finnish casino to offer such popular titles as Fairytale Legends Hansel & Gretel. The Swedish developer’s games are predictably popular in Scandinavian countries such as Finland. The site has a good selection of jackpot games too whose progressive jackpots are displayed alongside the thumbnail images. Jackpots start at a few thousand euros and climb from there.

About Karjala Casino

Karjala Casino is a well designed site, one that’s responsive and mobile-friendly but still equipped with all the links and information you’re likely to need at such a site. MT SecureTrade Limited are the company who run the site. They’re a Malta-based entity who are licensed and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority. They also hold a license issued by the UK Gambling Commission. On its About page, the site speaks of its strong Finnish identify which is particularly tied to Karelia in the east of the country. As they put it “we eat Karelian pies during the meetings because we think croissants are for toothless people”. 10/10 for originality and character, something which is all too often missing from online casinos.
On its About page, the site’s operators speak of how they want to further the perception of Finnish people, particularly their reputation for being helpful and hospitable. Where else on the web are you going to find a casino that promises its jackpots to be as hot as a Karelian stew? Apparently their customer support team might even be willing to give you some tips on cooking the best Karelian stew; feel free to take them up on this offer. The site has an FAQ as well as a section detailing its bonus terms; here you’ll learn that all bonus cash comes with a 35x wagering requirement.

Excellent Banking at Karjala Casino

Karjala Casino excels when it comes to payment options. There are loads to choose from, all delivered quickly and securely with the aid of 128-bit SSL encryption. It’s not all good news though, for Visa and MasterCard incur a 2.5% deposit fee. It’s unusual to encounter an online casino that charges players to deposit money. The minimum deposit amount is €10 and the maximum is €5,000.
Other deposit options are Trustly, Entercash, Neteller, Euteller, Paysafecard, Skrill and Zimpler. All of these options are free except for Euteller which has a 1.5% fee. One good thing about Karjala Casino is that withdrawals appear to clear instantly. It’s unclear whether there’s an arbitrary waiting period before winnings can be processed and withdrawn. The FAQ does touch upon withdrawals and deposits but doesn’t really provide any additional information.
>> 100 FS Claim Free Spins Bonus <<

1,000 Free Spins Bonus

The primary promotion at Karjala Casino is the 1,000 spins claimed in 100 days. These are applied to the Fire Joker slot. There’s only one other promotion in place at Karjala Casino and that’s a double your money deal. Deposit between €10 and €100 and you’ll be granted a 100% bonus. This bonus cash can be put towards any of the site’s 500-odd games. This, coupled with the prospect of 1,000 spins, should be enough to keep you coming back for the next 100 days at least. This isn’t the most generous welcome offer in terms of bonus cash, but the free spins are certainly in excess of anything you’re likely to find at another site.

No Filter

There might be a good selection of games available at Karjala Casino, but there isn’t a means of filtering results, searching for specific titles or favouriting them. You can’t sort by developer for instance or by name so your only option is to browse your way through all of the games that are lined up in a long grid that keeps on loading as you keep on scrolling down the page. There’s a lot of NetEnt games at least which will work well on tablet and mobile. Games like Alaskan Fishing, Agent Jane Blonde, Aloha Cluster Pays, Arcader and Avalon are all top-notch and well worth a go. The progressive jackpot games such as Arabian Nights have their current jackpot displayed. There are several branded slots in the mix too including Bridesmaids, Cluedo Spinning Detective and Battlsestar Galactica. Whatever genre of games you’re into – history; romance; fairy tales; Asian – you’ll find plenty here to suit.
The live casino at Karjala Casino proves to be surprisingly well stocked. There’s loads of live dealer-fronted games including numerous versions of Baccarat and Roulette. There’s even more Blackjack plus Casino Hold ‘Em, Dragonara, Double Ball Roulette and Three Card Poker. These titles are complemented by a range of virtual table games. This is a smaller selection of just seven titles and includes Red Dog, Super Wheel, Perfect Pairs European Blackjack and American Roulette. There’s a video poker section too but it’s even smaller with just half a dozen titles to choose from. Try the likes of Joker Poker, Power Poker, All American Poker and Aces & Faces.

Karjala Casino Conclusion

Karjala Casino is a very well put together site. Aside from a few faults, there’s a lot that’s good about this proudly Finnish casino. It’s refreshing to encounter a site that’s got real character to it and which isn’t just another identikit site. It’s also good to see that Karjala Casino isn’t just for Finnish players; British gamblers for example can also play here. The 1,000 spins bonus is great, but the accompanying welcome offer of a 100% match capped at €100 isn’t going to attract high rollers.
The range of deposit options available on the site is commendable but Karjala Casino loses points for levying charges for credit card deposits. These can be mitigated by using an alternative option such as Neteller, but for punters who care accustomed to paying with card this isn’t convenient. On the plus side, withdrawals are processed quickly, though a more detailed FAQ would be helpful to clarify exactly how long it takes withdrawals to clear. As for the games to be played at Karjala Casino, 500 titles is more than enough to be going on with. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a way of searching through these to get to the games you wanna play. For the most part though, Karjala Casino is a good casino that players from Eastern Finland, in particular, should enjoy.

Collecting California brewery bottle caps...where can I find more?

I am trying to collect bottle caps from as many CA-based based breweries as possible...I think I've bought all the individual ones currently available on eBay. Looking for recommendations on where I might be able to find more, whether for individual sale or in bulk. I even have a list of the breweries I'm still missing. I lived in CA for several years where my collection began. I'm trying to get bottle caps from 61 different breweries to fill a wooden map of CA. Currently I have 25.

The current stay-at-home order will remain in effect until April 30.
Alabama Governor Ivey said the state needs to expand its testing before resuming normal economic activity despite being eager to get the state’s economy moving.

ALASKA

On April 24th, Alaska allowed businesses and restaurants to open back up in most parts of the state. These personal services and companies must do so under strict health and safety restrictions.
Bigger cities like Anchorage delayed their partial opening until April 27th.
Additionally, Governor Dunleavy has said citizens may visit their doctors and schedule elective surgeries on/after May 4th.

ARIZONA

Governor Ducey has announced the stay at home order will continue only until April 30th. The state also will allow elective surgeries to continue starting on May 1st.
On the other hand, Navajo Nation’s government will remain closed until May 17th.

ARKANSAS

While there is no exact date, Governor Hutchinson has plans to loosen the restrictions on businesses over the next few weeks. This means certain non-essential businesses will be allowed to operate.
Elective surgeries were allowed to continue on April 27th.

CALIFORNIA

CA Governor Gavin Newsome has not announced any official end to the stay at home order. Despite that, the state has allowed the scheduling of important surgeries like heart surgery or cancerous tumor removal.
The state is limiting the issuing of permits for events and activities for the foreseeable future. On April 13th, the Governor announced the Western States Pact with Oregon and Washington. This pact articulates that these 3 states will operate together in their reopening on when it is safe to do so. Nevada and Colorado have also joined this pact.

COLORADO

Colorado’s stay at home order has been replaced with a “safer at home” strategy that started on April 27th. While not mandatory, residents are heavily urged to stay at home as much as possible. High-risk populations have been asked to stay home at all times possible.
Special businesses that offer curbside pick up are now open. Additionally, personal training and dog grooming have been allowed to resume (if they follow social distancing practices). Elective medical procedures have also been allowed to continue.
Governor Polis states that more businesses will be allowed to open in the following weeks. On May 4th, non-essential office work will be allowed to continue. Colorado has also coordinated its re-opening plans with Nevada, California, Oregan, and Washington.

Deleware Governor Carney has extended the statewide stay at home order until May 15th or when the “public health threat is eliminated.” The state has said that opening can start upon seeing a 28 days decline of new COVID-19 cases.
Additionally, the state has joined up with the other states in the Northeast to ensure a safe re-opening and start to their economy. The governor also stated that even if the state reopens, social distancing, hand washing, face covering, and a limit on large gatherings will stay in effect.

FLORIDA

The stay at home order for Florida will continue until April 30th. Beaches of Florida are able to reopen if the local leaders have decided it is safe to do so. On the other hand, the Keys will not reopen to visitors or tourism until June or later.

GEORGIA

State restrictions were eased starting on April 24th. Businesses like tattoo shops, gyms, bowling alleys, barbers and hair salons, nail salons, and others have been allowed to re-open if they follow safe distancing rules.
Nightclubs and bars are still closed with no clear word on when reopening can continue.

HAWAII

Governor Ige has stated that the stay at home order will last through April 30th and potentially later. Bigger cities like Honolulu have their own independent stay at home order which extends through all of May.

IDAHO

The state of Idaho is currently allowing businesses to operate under certain conditions like curbside pickup, drive-thru/drive-in, or delivery. The state doesn’t have an explicit stay at home order but rather an “Order to Self Isolate” that ends on April 30th. There is no official word on when the full state will open.

ILLINOIS

Illinois Governor Pritzker has stated the stay at home order will extend to May 30th based on data they have analyzed in the last two months. Some modifications may be made in that time and restrictions lifted depending on testing and tracing initiatives.

INDIANA

Indiana’s current stay at home order ends on May 1st. Governor Holcomb has said that he is going to work with the state hospital association to determine when elective surgeries may continue.

IOWA

So far, Iowa has not given an official stay at home order. Governor Reynolds did issue a State of Public Health Disaster Emergency in mid-March. This required all nonessential businesses to close until April 30.
On April 27th, the government stated the 77 of Iowa’s 99 counties can begin reopening on May 1st. This includes gyms, restaurants, enclosed malls, and retail stores if they stay at 50% capacity. The remaining 22 counties have higher rates of COVID-19 and will have their closures extend until at least May 15th.

KANSAS

Kansas’ stay at home order is expected to end on May 3rd.
Governor Kelly has said that the state “nowhere near where we need to be with testing supplies,” which could mean the stay at order will be extended. Either way, the state plans to loosen restrictions in a gradual rollout rather than an all at once reopening.

KENTUCKY

Kentucky Governor Beshear has begun to reopen the health sectors of the state. On April 27, in person, office and ambulance visits were allowed to continue. Additionally, diagnostic, radiology and non-urgent visits are allowed.
The state plans to reopen the state in phases, with restrictions easing each week for a four week period. This reopening plan will begin on May 11th but could be pushed back depending on COVID circumstances.
Additionally, customers and employees will be asked to wear a mask while visiting/working in essential businesses.

On May 1st, retail stores can open under the condition of offering curbside delivery only. Restaurants will also be allowed to offer seats to customers, but there will be no wait staff or table service. Customers are allowed to sit outside and eat at restaurants as long as the mind social distancing rules. Gov. Edwards has also required all workers that are interacting with the public to wear masks.
Despite the easing of restrictions, Edwards says the state is not near where it should be in regards to new cases, hospitalizations, and testing.

The state of Maine has joined its neighbors New Hampshire and Vermont on planning their state’s reopening measures

MARYLAND

Maryland Governor Hogan outlined a three-stage reopening plan on April 24th. This will allow a gradual reopening of non-essential businesses, gatherings, and public services. Not giving a clear date, the governor stated that the easing of restrictions may begin in early May if COVID-19 hospital cases decline.
The first phase includes allowing certain small businesses to reopen, outdoor gym glasses, recreational activities to continue, and allowing religious gatherings of limited attendance. Certain medical procedures will be allowed to continue as well.
The second phase allows raising the minimum number of people allowed in a gathering, childcare services reopening, indoor gyms, the return of transit schedules, and bars and restaurants reopening under certain conditions.
The last phase allows larger social gatherings in places like religions services, entertainment venues, and dining establishments along with fewer restrictions on nursing homes and hospital visits.

MASSACHUSETTS

Currently, the state’s emergency order that requires all nonessential business to be closed ends on May 4th. Governor Baker has informed citizens that he and state officials have begun discussing the reopening of the state but there isn’t a clear plan yet.
Before reopening, the state says they need to have more testing, tracing, and quarantine procedures in place.
Massachusetts is actively working with its neighboring Northeastern states to develop a plan to reopen the economy.

Michigan’s stay at home order extends til at least May 15th. Currently, Governor Whitmer has eased restrictions of their COVID-19 response, allowing some businesses to open and outdoor activities to continue.

MINNESOTA

Minnesota has allowed some businesses to open starting on April 27th. This order allows 80,000 to 100,000 office, industrial, and manufacturing workers to return to their jobs.
Governor Walz has stated that businesses must create and implement a COVID-19 readiness plan that outlines what measures they are taking to protect their worker’s health and safety.

MONTANA

Montana began reopening on April 26th, allowing individuals and businesses to have fewer restrictions. Retail and street businesses were able to open on April 27th if they follow social distancing practices and limit store capacity. Restaurants and bars can start offering some services after May 4th while businesses like gyms, theaters, and places of large assembly must remain closed.
The state’s travel quarantine will still remain, requiring non-work related out of state travelers to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

NEBRASKA

Nebraska state officials plan to relax some of their COVID restrictions on May 4th. Nebraska is one of the few states that issued no stay at home order for its citizens.

All other businesses like bars and theaters are required to stay closed until May 31st.

NEVADA

The current stay at home order is set to expire on April 30th but Governor Sisolak says the state is currently not ready to reopen.

There is no clear end date for New York’s restrictions, but as of now, nonessential businesses are required to stay closed until May 15th.
The state officials have stated the reopening is going to happen in phases once the state meets the federal guidelines that hospitalizations decline for 14 days. Governor Cuomo did state that each phase will have a 2 week period between to monitor the results.

North Carolina’s current stay at home order for North Carolina is extended through May 8th.
Governor Cooper has stated the state could open in three phases if COVID-19 cases continue to decrease. Phase one would be that stay at home orders would remain, but some non-essential businesses will be able to open. Phase two includes the lifting of stay at home orders for those not at risk and the reopening of bars, restaurants, and churches under reduced capacity. Phase three would ease the restrictions for at-risk populations and allowed increased attendance at businesses and social gatherings.

NORTH DAKOTA

North Dakota has stated that many closed businesses may be allowed to open on May 1st. The state is another one of the few places with no explicit stay at home order and only shut down schools, gyms, restaurants, salons, and theaters.

OREGON

Governor Brown issued an executive order requiring citizens to stay at home and will stay in effect until ended by her. There has been no official word on when the order will end but some restrictions on businesses will be lifted on May 1st.
This will allow hospitals, surgical centers, and medical and dental offices to resume nonemergency procedures as long as they follow safe COVID-19 distancing and sanitation practices.
State officials say more restrictions will not be eased until the state sees the following: a decrease in the growth of active COVID-19 cases, sufficient personal protective equipment available, large open capacity in hospitals, increased testing, tracing and isolating of new cases, and plans on how to protect at-risk communities.

VERMONT

Vermont has a similar “Stay Safe, Stay Home” order that extends until May 15th. Governor Scott has also developed a 5 point plan on how to open the state while fighting the COVID-19 outbreak. Starting on May 1st, farmers' markets will be allowed to open as long as the social distancing guidelines are followed.

Stay at Home orders in Washington state currently last until May 4th. Additionally, most parks and recreational areas will be allowed to open on May 5th.
Washington has joined California, Oregan, Nevada, and Colorado in the Western States Pact to determine when it is safe to reopen their economies.

WEST VIRGINIA

Governor Justice has introduced the “Comeback Roadmap” as an outline of how the state will reopen going forward. The plan contains three phases that are broken up into weeks. Week one allows hospitals to start elective medical procedures and also allows the reopening of outpatient healthcare including primary care, dental, mental health, and more. Daycare centers will also be allowed to reopen.
Week two would allow businesses with less than 10 workers to go back to work. Restaurants with outdoor seating could resume service and church and funerals services could start again.
In the third phase, which is a three-week process, includes retail stores, gyms, hotels, spas, casinos, and other businesses to reopen. Additionally, offices and government businesses could return. Each of these phases would include the required temperature checks and mask-wearing.

Review: Hanafuda Cards - not just a deck of playing cards, but a system of games with a rich heritage!

Note: This review only features text - to view it with numerous inline images, see a cross-post on BGG here.

Hanafuda Playing Cards

I know very little about art. I also know very little about Japanese or Korean culture. But I can recognize something amazing when I see it. And that's why when I first saw the Hanafuda deck created by Jason Johnson and artist Antonietta Fazio-Johnson (both from IndianWolf Studios), I immediately knew that I was looking at something special!
There are four decks altogether; a set of two Hanami decks that were produced earlier this year, and a set of two Sensu decks currently on Kickstarter. Each project produced two decks: a more contemporary poker style deck, and a more traditional Hanafudi deck.
So what is the fuss about and why did this capture my imagination? In part it is the same reason that the Pipmen World deck from Ben Jones and Elephant Playing Cards captivated me back in 2017. That deck is a remarkable example of polyptych artwork, where each of the 52 individual playing cards can be put together to make a single larger panoramic picture. It was an amazing concept that blew my mind, and I was super impressed by the creativity and work that went into that project (see my pictorial review here). The Hanafuda decks employ a similar concept, because each set of four cards can be placed together to form a tetraptych, or panoramic image. It's brilliant and it's beautiful!
But there's more going on here with these beautiful cards besides beautiful artwork. These are no ordinary deck of cards, because with a Hanafuda deck, you don't just get a set of playing cards, but a game system that lets you play a whole set of unique games designed for that deck. Hanafuda even has its own entry on BoardGameGeek for this reason; you can also learn more about Hanafuda over on Wikipedia here. And the Fusion deck in particular can be used for all standard card games and for all Hanafuda games
Hanafuda literally means "flower cards", and they are playing cards of Japanese origin that can be used to play games, and can be found in Hawaii and Korea besides of course Japan. Hanafuda cards normally have twelve suits, each of which represents a month of the year (January, February, etc). Each of these is designated by a different flower, and the four cards of each month can be placed together to make a panorama. They are thought to have originated in the period between the 1600s and 1800s when gambling and playing cards were banned in Japan (thereby fostering their development as small cards that could be easily hidden!), so they have a long history.
Over time, many different games have been invented for Hanafuda cards, and can be played with a Hanafuda deck. Traditionally a Hanafuda deck has small thick cards, but the decks from IndianWolf Studios use poker-sized cards. But besides the idea of bringing Hanafuda to standard playing cards, what IndianWolf Studios has done is that they've produced two decks for each project, one in the more traditional style of Japan/Korea, and another which blends this with the usual suits and values of Western playing cards.
So sometimes East really does meet West, and here you get the best of both worlds, and can either play traditional cards, or one of the many games in the Hanafuda universe. Lets take a look at the two wonderful projects that come to us from IndianWolf Studios!

HANAMI EDITION

First of all, we have the two lovely tuck boxes for the Hanami edition, both of which are touched with gold foil for a completely lavish look. For added luxury, each comes with a gold foil stamp, and a completely gold foil interior!

Hanami Hanafuda deck

Let's begin with the Hanafuda deck, which is of course the major attraction and center-piece here.
Each suit has four cards and corresponds to a different month and features a different flower, e.g. January (The Pine), and February (The Plum). One of my favourite suits is for the month of August (The Suzuki Grass), which has a spectacular and stunning picture with the backdrop of a colourful moon-filled sky. The year is rounded out with December (The Paulownia), while an extra suit is provided as koi-filled Jokers.
Thirteen sets of four of course only makes 54 cards, so there's also the two extra Jokers shown on the right (below), while the card shown on the left pictures the artwork on the card backs. Koi were chosen for the card backs and Jokers, since koi are common symbols in Asian culture, and are considered to be positive symbols of prosperity and longevity, making these beautiful icons a natural fit for this deck.
Both the Hanami decks were produced by Legends Playing Card Company, using their Emerald Finish. I love LPCC playing cards, but the Emerald Finish is a relatively newer finish, and isn't considered to be the top choice for cardists. I don't think that matters, because it's still a very durable finish that is fine for playing card games and for collectors.

Hanami Fusion deck

The Hanami Hanafuda deck is magnificent, and while you can use it to play Hanfuda games, you of course can't use it to play standard card games, since it doesn't have traditional suits. No problem, say our friends at IndianWolf Studies - we'll make a hybrid deck, that fuses the Hanafuda cards with the familiar indices of a standard deck!
These cards are white bordered unlike the black bordered Hanafuda cards, and contain the number and suit we'd expect in a normal deck, as well as the flower and type corresponding to their identity in a Hanafuda deck.
Here's how the creators describe the concept of the Fusion deck: "Since traditional hanafuda cards lack pips and indices, we designed our own hanafuda indices to indicate the flower, month, and type of each card. We combined these indices with traditional hanafuda imagery and standard poker indices to create a multipurpose deck that could be used to play both Eastern and Western games."
The result is quite a different look than the Hanafuda deck, but it is practical and can be used for standard games, and yet it does retain the charming and vibrant panoramic artwork of the original.
If you place four cards of the same value besides each other, you'll see that the artwork still matches.

Games Rulebook

But if we have some Hanafuda cards, then we could also use a book with rules for Hanafuda games, right? Let's be honest, that would be kind of nice! Once again, the folks at IndianWolf Studios have stepped up to the plate, by producing a full-colour 236 page book in combination with this project. Apparently rules for Hanafudu games can be hard to find or interpret, so they have done the hard work for us by putting this together in a lovely book, which is available as a hard copy or as an eBook.
I have the eBook version, and was very impressed. Let's be honest, 236 pages is impressive! It contains a collection of 37 different games organized into categories, in sections for four main types of games: Capture Games, Sequence Games, Luck Games, and Fusion Solitaire Games. A full list of the games included can be found here as well as here, including sample pages.
Here's how Jason explains the thinking behind the creation of this rulebook:
"This book was inspired by our love for hanafuda games and our desire to share those games with others. The scarcity of decent rules is a major hinderance to new hanafuda players. Years ago, when we got our first hanafuda decks, we spent a lot of time gathering (& translating) rules just so we could learn to play. After that, we spent even more time trying to find other hanafuda games to play. In the end, we decided we should put our knowledge & research into a book so more people could learn to play hanafuda. One of the really interesting things we learned during our research, is how prevalent the use of 'house rules' are. Common games have many rule variants. There are jokes about the practice that claim that every family would make up their own rules so that visitors could never win.For our rulebook, we did our best to preserve the games (and their variant rules), while making them more accessible to players."
Within each section the games are arranged by difficulty, using a handy color code. A final section at the end of the book contains handy Quick Reference Charts, which help out with scoring. Within the explanations themselves are game-play and scoring examples, pictures, and variants.

SENSU EDITION

The latest project from IndianWolf Studios is the delightful follow-up, Sensu edition, which is currently up for funding on Kickstarter (funding ends around August 31st 2018). This is a new series of playing cards, that once again offers a flower themed deck with beautiful illustrations, and is inspired by traditional hanafuda, this time with inspiration also coming from the illustrations of Uchiyama Rossetsu (1892). The two beautiful tuck boxes include an embossed linen feel.

Sensu Hanafuda deck

Once again, these cards are standard poker size, but the cards have a more serious and earthy look, and less of a cartoon-like and playful feel.
Like the Hanami deck, the Hanafuda deck has no pips, but features floral imagery in the 12 suits of Japanese hanafuda. As with the Hanami edition, the four cards of each suit in the Sensu edition have been created so that they combine to form a single floral image.
An uncut sheet is available as an add on for this project. I haven't seen the uncut sheets for Hanami first-hand, and while they were beautiful, the Chinese factory that produced them did incorporate very thin white grid lines dividing the cards, which is arguably less than ideal. The Sensu cards are going to be printed at LPCC's factory in Taiwan, so I'm told that this issue shouldn't surface this time around.
A different finish will also be used this time. Unlike the Hanami decks, the Sensu decks will be printed by Legends Playing Card Company in Taiwan with their Classic Finish, which in my experience is a superior finish to the Emerald Finish used for the Hanami decks. The quality here should satisfy everyone, from cardists to collectors.

Sensu Fusion deck

Just as with the previous project, the Fusion deck combines the Hanafuda deck with the indices of standard playing cards, to create a deck that can be used for both Eastern and Western card games.
Rather than just have the usual indices with traditional suits and values, the hanafuda indices on these cards also indicate the flowemonth, and card type. This gives the cards a dual function, and these indices are helpful in enabling the Fusion deck to be used to learn and teach hanafuda - even if you're starting by using these cards for a traditional card game.
The Jokers of the Sensu deck have a much more austere look than their Hanami counterparts. However the Sensu card backs have a more intricate design that creates a whole new overall look.

Games Rulebook

A rulebook is once again being provided as an add-on, and the value of this shouldn't be under-estimated. As mentioned already, Hanafudu rules are not that readily available in a very usable form, and the IndianWolf Studios team really has done all the hard work for us by making this available. To give you an idea of how useful this is, some people are so keen to get this book that they plan to get the playing cards, just in order to get the book!
The text of the Sensu rulebook is unchanged from the Hanami one; the only difference is that the art has been altered to match the art of the new Sensu decks. But there's been a lot of wonderful feedback on the original book, and positive comments like the following help emphasize its credibility and usefulness:
"Love the clear illustrations and examples of scoring. Very in-depth rules explanation of common Hanafuda games, as well as some original games inspired by classic western games such as Rummy." - Dee Glazebrook "This is a pretty hefty book, glad I spent a little more to get it!" - Michelle "Both the book and the cards are wonderful and I can't wait to read up on some of the games and try them out." - Martin "Lovely. Approachable. Quite a lovely book. I got my first Hanafudu deck about fifty years ago ... This book is the first that really makes playing with the cards approachable, and adds quite a variety of games." - abwx "Ridiculously cheap, for the effort consumed in the production of this excellent games compendium." - Bruno Buffonè "Best book on hanafuda rules. Wonderfully laid-out, colorful, easy-to-understand collection of many Hanafuda games. The only book you need." - Wade Daniel Cooksey

CONCLUSIONS

The Hanafuda games

It's obvious what kind of card games can be played with the Fusion deck, since you can use this for playing any card game that you'd play with a standard deck. But what about the Hanafuda deck, and what kinds of games can you play with this?
The easiest thing to do here is list the 37 games that the rulebook from IndianWolf Studios includes, which are arranged by the following four categories:
Capture Games are the most popular Hanafuda games. Capture games involve capturing cards from a field and creating yaku (special combinations of cards) to score points. ● Absolute Beginner: Simplified Game for Beginners (2-4 players) ● Beginner: Matching Flowers (2-3 players), Hana-Awase 1 (3-4 players), Hana-Awase 2 (3 players), Mushi (2 players), Six Hundred (2-3 players), Hachi-juu Hana (2-3 players) ● Intermediate: Min-Hwatu (2-3 players), Koi-Koi (2 players), Oni Koi-Koi (2 players), Higo-Bana (2-7 players), Tensho simplified (2 players) ● Expert: Go-Stop (2-7 players), Hachi-Hachi (2-7 players), Sudaoshi (3 players), Hachi simplified (2 players), Hachi (2 players), Tensho (2 players)
Sequence Games involve playing cards from your hand in sequential order with the objective of emptying your hand. ● Beginner: Poka (2 players), Hiyoko simplified (2-4 players), Isuri simplified (2-3 players), Kage (2 players) ● Intermediate: Hiyoko (2-4 players), Isuri (2-3 players)
Luck Games are simple, fast-paced, gambling-oriented games. Many of the games in this section were traditionally played with Kabufuda decks. ● Beginner: Sutda simplified (2-10 players), Hiki-Kabu (2-10 players), Oicho-Kabu (2-10 players), Kyo-Kabu (2-10 players), Kingo (2-10 players) ● Intermediate: Sota (2-6 players), Sutda (2-10 players)
Fusion Games are a collection of Western-inspired games that we reinterpreted and designed for gameplay with a Hanafuda deck. These games provide a familiar platform for Western players to become more comfortable with the Hanafuda deck. ● Beginner: Seasons (1-4 players), Pyramid (1 players) ● Intermediate: Solitaire (1 players), Eight Off (1 players), Hana-Rumi (2-4 players), Hana-Gin (2-4 players)
Some of the Fusion Games listed above will be immediately familiar to anyone who has some experience with Western card games, such as the three solitaire games Pyramid, Solitaire, and Eight Off, while games like Hana-Rumi and Hana-Gin have obvious parallels with the counterparts that inspired them: Rummy and Gin. But these are mainly designed to get people familiar with the Hanafuda deck and it's really the Hanafuda games themselves that are of special interest.
The Luck Games are good for social settings, and are fast and fun, whereas the Sequence Games require you to empty your hand and have a more serious and thoughtful feel to the game-play. But what people will especially find interesting is the Capture Games category, where game-play revolves around capturing cards from a field and creating point-scoring combinations. This style of gameplay is reminiscent of traditional and popular card games like Scopa and Cassino.
If you are starting from scratch, I'd recommend beginning with the Simplified Game for Beginners and with Matching Flowers, to familiarize yourself with the cards. Then eventually work yourself up to the classic and popular Japanese two player game Koi-Koi. When you're ready for it, give the more complex 2-7 player game Go-Stop a try, because this is arguably the most popular game played with Hanafuda cards in Korea.
Higo-bana is a version of Hanafuda that is very popular in Hawaii, and is also included in the book, and can be recommended. And of course, you can always play the kinds of solitaire games you'd play with a regular deck - enjoying the magnificent artwork of this deck instead! The beauty of a good rulebook like the one provided with the Hanami and Sensu projects, is that it is a terrific resource that really helps people with a Hanafuda deck get started in exploring this new world of possibilities.

What do others think?

Hanafuda cards have a long history, and I was curious to hear from people who have more experience than me in playing Hanafuda games. Here are some positive comments that people have shared on BoardGameGeek about it, which help give some idea of its popularity and appeal:
"If you enjoy Scopa or Casino, you might like this more complex family of card games." - sbszine "A Japanese card game. I know how to play the simplest variant, Matching Flowers, and it makes a fun 2-player game." - beri "This is a childhood favorite for me. I play with "Hawaii rules" ... The game itself is incredibly nostalgic for me, but does withstand the test of time - it is still an enjoyable game to play as an adult or in a variety of contexts." - Keakealani "I grew up playing this game in Hawaii. A classic game that can be played over and over again. Highly recommended." - BraveReideen "Once you learn the scoring combinations, you can have a lot of fun with this game." - pattonre "Several games. I liked this game so much more than I expected, since I'm not a big fan of trick taking/set collecting games. This game is worth owning, especially if one can find a deck that's also printed as a standard poker deck as well." - Landstander "Interesting mix of skill, luck and beautiful cards. Easy rules that can be remembered while sipping Sake." - Æleksandr Þræð "I just love this game...quick to play and seemingly simple it can be played as such as or it can be deep and complex." - Shaynerichards72 "Beautiful game with an amazing push your luck mechanic. This is the mother of all push your luck games! Simple, elegant, and beautiful... A great way to pass the time." - mermuse "Very good game." - Pete Walsh "Beautiful elegant cards/tiles with a variety of rules for different games to play. " - tantras

Popular Games: Koi-Koi

Perhaps the most common game people use Hanafuda cards for is Koi Koi, a traditional two player game from Japan. It has the aim of forming special card combinations (called "yaku") from cards in your point pile, which you capture from the table using matching cards in your hand or drawn from the supply. Once you make a "yaku", you can cash in your points, or "keep going" (a literal translation of koi-koi, hence the game's name) to try to get more point-scoring yaku. It's an enjoyable game, as comments from experienced players make evident:
"Koi Koi/Hanafuda reminds me of a mix of Poker and Cribbage but with prettier cards!" - Mease19 "I've only learned to play Koi-Koi so far. It's the easiest of the game variations to start with." - JeffTimothy "Koi-koi is a brilliant game." - kingofkancho "Love Koi-Koi. Like to try other variations too." - shoex "Koi Koi is not all that challenging, but a relaxing two player game to play." - Godeke "Discovered Koi Koi (played with the Hanafuda deck) and spent the whole weekend just playing that minigame ... The game requires you to match cards in your hand with cards in the middle to make sets, but as the game has its origins in gambling there is a risky push your luck mechanic." - wayward_cloud "Oh, Hanafuda, my beloved Hanafuda. I prefer playing Koi-Koi with this deck. Really exciting, risk valuating game with not-so-much depth." - Kyuzo "My favorite game is Koi Koi. Lots of randomness, but timeless. I feel a real connection to the past when I play this." - smtudor "Like Japanese poker.. plays quick and is a fun time." - norifurikake "A very nice, exceptionaly mobile game. The most known is Koi- koi. If you have a bit of interest in Japan you should have it, especially if you like fast 2 player games." - Dream_walker "It takes some getting used to the plethora of pictures that one must recognize to play the games, but it's generally worth it ... mainly for Koi Koi, a game I know well." - Iguanoman "Koi-koi... Easy, somehow based on luck, but still gives some thrill from playing." - korsarz "Easy, quick, and fun." - youngpoisoner "Pleasant, relaxing, mildly luck-driven and endlessly replayable two-player game using the beautiful but initially confusing Hanafuda deck." - Ottia "Seems like its all luck but its about managing the luck in a partially known situation. knowing which set it which is rather helpful." - losthorizons "Very fun and addictive 2 player game played with the beautiful Japanese Hanafuda cards." - FranklinT "I love looking at my starting hand and what's on the table, and trying to figure out which combinations I should go for. As the game progresses, I like how I have to modify my plan, and sometimes hate draft to keep my opponent from getting a high scoring combination." - chearns "Fun, light game. Plays as long or as short as you like." - TheDane "Although the Hanafuda cards look very unfamiliar in the beginning, the game is a lot of fun once the flower motives make sense. Play is simple and fast. There is a lot of luck involved but tactical decision have to be made too. Like in Poker you can even calculate the chances of getting the required card and play accordingly." - h2posh "2 player poker, but much deeper and way more fun..." - Kairisan "It's got the fishing of Scopa, the set-collection of Mah-Jong and the delightful eccentricity of Cribbage." - qwertymartin

Popular Games: Go-Stop

One of the more advanced and popular games played with Hanafuda cards is Go-Stop, which is also called Korean Poker, and is effectively an advanced version of Koi-Koi. You can watch some videos explaining how it works here or here and here. While it originated in Japan, Hanafuda spread to Korea, and this more complex form of the game game is very popular there. Although these games have a lot of luck (as you'd expect for games that may have originated in a gambling context), they can be very enjoyable in the right context, as the following comments make obvious:
"I've had quite a bit of fun with Go Stop, the small plastic cards, and playing various little games with my daughter so I'm gonna rate it high." - aaarg_ink "Go Stop. Simple and somewhat luck-oriented fishing game, but seems to have sufficient depth as well." - Ratsia "I love this game "Go-Stop" style, which is the Korean style of playing. But, fun in Koi Koi style (Jpn) as well." - snootiecrunch "Most popular game in Korea!" - khalon "Have been played so many card games but this one is the best and exciting game." - Matthew_Son "I learned this game from a college roommate and we used to play it for DAYS. Literally days straight -- no sleep. Just ramen noodles, jugs of wine, and hanafuda cards." - fenwic "A great gambling game. After you understood the principle and learned the cards, it gets a nice balance between luck and skill. It plays great with 2 players, and a hand is played in about 10 minutes and my wife loves it." - wolfzell "Every Korean knows the game. Come on." - shininiu "Korean game with a zillion rules. Get enough points and you can stop the round, or Go for more." - samlamiam "Luck and challenge well balanced, a very quick game. Easy to play and learn, not to mention FUN!" - kyynarpaa "Korean gambling game. The players try to make combos matching their cards, in order to get points. When a player gets 3 points, he can continue "go-ing". Risk is a factor to win more money from the other players." - Xoota "Great set collecting game for 2-3 players." - bbblasterfire "I played this game like mad with my Korean friends in college. It's a good social/drinking/gambling game for three players, and there just aren't a lot of those around. It also works for two." - Glamorous Mucus "Go Stop is a lightweight, social game: it travels well, the rounds are quick, and the rules aren't too demanding once you get used to the iconography. If you want something quick and fun, this is a good choice." - ddubin "Seriously addictive game using hanafuda cards." - Shadoglare "Fishing game with lots of rules and betting. Beautiful cards and a bit of strategy" - Qhorin

Recommendation

What I love first of all about the Hanafuda decks is that every card is unique, and yet each set of four cards can be cleverly combined to produce panoramic images. The decks were designed with this in mind, and the art was created as 13 tetraptychs depicting colourful and eye-catching floral scenes. This visual beauty gives them instant appeal, and it's Antonietta who deserves the credit for creating these beautiful cards. The two people behind IndianWolf Studios are the husband and wife team of Jason and Antonietta Johnson, with Jason providing the expertise that comes from a background in computer science and design, and Antonietta being the artist, who is skilled in digital art, illustration, and has a degree and extensive experience in Fine Arts. Together, they have made a wonderful and important contribution that both the custom playing card community and the gaming community should welcome, with these attractive decks, as well as the accompanying rule-book.
But perhaps more importantly, these playing cards draw on a rich tradition, since it is the floral motifs and symbolism-rich imagery of traditional Japanese Hanafuda that really inspired them. These cards are both functional as well as beautiful, and together with a rulebook, you have access to a variety of games that have a long history, and are still popular today especially in Japan and Korea. I've seen many comments from people who have pointed out that the small size of traditional Hanafuda cards makes them difficult to shuffle and use, and they have lamented the fact that they aren't available with regular sized cards. Well folks, your wish has been granted, and now experienced players of popular games like Koi-Koi and Stop-Go can play with normal sized cards, while people entirely unfamiliar with this genre of games have the ideal platform to learn and explore these classics.
Are the Sensu Hanafuda decks for you? If you enjoy original artwork that draws heavily on ancient traditions in a beautiful and creative way, then these are definitely well worth a look. Note that the quality of the published cards will be excellent, both artistically and from the perspective of the playing cards themselves, with production in Taiwan by industry leader LPCC. And if you enjoy playing original or unusual card games, then this is a rare opportunity to obtain an excellent rulebook, and a delightful and unusual deck of cards that will enable you to play a large range of Hanafuda games that are popular in Japan and Korea, and have a long history.
Either way, there's no doubt that these are incredibly unusual and beautiful decks of playing cards, and the creators deserve to be applauded for making a valuable and unique contribution to the card game industry. Well done Jason and Antonietta, in creating the beautiful Hanami decks, and now following up with the beautiful Sensu decks!
